How to Calculate the Total Cost of Ownership (TCO) When Importing Glass Bottles from China?

When importing glass bottles from China, the lowest unit price is not always the lowest total cost.

For importers, the key metric is Total Cost of Ownership (TCO), which includes all costs from production to delivery.

What Is TCO for Glass Bottle Imports?

TCO = Product Cost + Tooling + Packaging + Freight + Insurance + Duty + Taxes + Customs + Inspection + Local Delivery + Losses

Even small changes in freight, breakage, or packaging can significantly affect final cost per bottle.

1. Product Cost

Example:

Item Cost
Unit price $0.38
Quantity 100,000
Total $38,000

Check Incoterms (EXW, FOB, CIF, etc.), as they change total cost.

2. Mold Cost (Tooling)

Custom bottles require molds.

Example:

  • Mold cost: $2,000

  • 100,000 pcs → $0.02/bottle

  • 1,000,000 pcs → $0.002/bottle

Tooling should be spread over total production volume.

3. Packaging Impact

Packaging affects both cost and breakage.

Options include pallets, cartons, dividers, shrink wrap, etc.

A cheaper package may increase breakage, which can cost more than savings.

4. Ocean Freight

Freight is a major cost driver.

Example:

  • Freight: $4,000

  • Quantity: 100,000 pcs

  • Cost: $0.04/bottle

5. Container Efficiency

More bottles per container = lower cost per unit.

Always check:

  • Bottles per pallet

  • Pallets per container

  • Loading plan

Poor loading increases TCO even if unit price is low.

6. Import Duty & Taxes

Example:

  • Customs value: $40,000

  • Duty: 5% = $2,000

Add VAT/GST if applicable.

7. Destination Costs

Includes:

  • Customs clearance

  • Port charges

  • Documentation

  • Local delivery

Example total: $1,550 → $0.0155/bottle

8. Inspection & Quality Cost

Includes third-party inspection, lab testing, and quality control.

Also consider hidden cost of defects:

Defects = rework + replacement + delay + freight loss

9. Breakage & Loss

Example:

  • 1% breakage on 100,000 pcs

  • Loss = 1,000 bottles

Breakage should be included in real cost per usable bottle.

10. Inventory Cost

Large orders require storage:

  • Warehouse rent

  • Handling

  • Insurance

  • Cash flow pressure

Lower unit price may increase inventory cost.

11. Example TCO Calculation

Item Cost
Bottles $38,000
Mold $2,000
Packaging $1,500
Freight $4,000
Insurance $200
Duty $2,000
Customs & delivery $1,700
Inspection $300
Total $49,700

TCO per bottle = $49,700 ÷ 100,000 = $0.497

Actual cost is much higher than $0.38 unit price.

12. Simple TCO Formula

TCO per bottle = Total cost ÷ Usable bottles

Always calculate based on usable quantity, not shipped quantity.

13. Key Supplier Questions

Ask suppliers:

  • What Incoterm is used?

  • How many bottles per container?

  • What is breakage rate?

  • Who owns the mold?

  • What is packaging method?

  • What is inspection process?

Conclusion

TCO is more important than unit price when importing glass bottles from China.

A small price difference can lead to large cost gaps when freight, duty, breakage, and logistics are included.

Focus on landed cost per usable bottle, not factory price.
